On May 1 1942 the United Airlines flight from San Francisco to New York crashed into Wasatch Mountain, less than 3 miles from Salt Lake City. The pilot, D. Brown was killed along with eighteen other passengers and crew. Salvaged mail as badly burned and received a four line violet cachet. ‘DAMAGED DUE TO AIR MAIL / INTERRUPTION NEAR / SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH / MAY 1 1942. The mail was forwarded in ambulance covers and a Salt Lake City Post Office Department cover with a MAY 2 1942 cancel accompanies the damaged original. (Sanford Ref. 420501)
