On July 28 1943 the American Airlines DC 3 flying from Louisville to Nashville crashed and was destroyed by fire when the pilot Harry S Stiller tried an emergency landing in bad weather. 20 passengers and crew were killed. Very little mail (5 lbs) was salvaged, all in burnt condition. A four line red cachet ‘DAMAGE DUE TO AIR MAIL / INTERRUPTION NEAR / TRAMMEL, KY / JULY 28 1943 was applied to salvaged mail.
