‘VILLE DE NICE’ 1936 MEDITERRANEAN SEA’ The Air France Loire -Olivier 242 flying boat ‘Ville de Nice left Marseille on 8 May 1936 for Algiers. At 4.00 p.m. it made a forced landing in the sea 8o kms from Algiers. Four hours later it was found and taken into tow by a tug, but the line broke and the flying boat sank. Some mail was recovered. This cover from London to Algeria, which has had one stamp soaked off in the accident, was returned to London where a manuscript notation ‘Damaged by Sea Water in / accident to French Mail / Plane’.
