1852 stampless envelope to Ballyaghy, Ireland, written by Captain Henry William Bruce to his daughter Jane. It has LONDON November 16 and 17 1852 transit cancels and a Ballyaghy NO18 1852 arrival cancel on the back. In 1851 Bruce was appointed Commodore of the West Coast of Africa Station. He negotiated and signed the Treaty Between Great Britain and Lagos of 1 January 1852. It is believed he was at Ascension on board the ‘Penelope’, a frigate that was patrolling the west coast of Africa patroling for the slave ships when this letter was written.
