1941 envelope to a sailor on the destroyer H.M.S. Dunedin, that has been returned with a label attached stating “Return to sender on Admiralty Instructions./ It is with the deepest regret that you / are informed that the addressee is missing / on active service.” On November 28 1941 she was sunk by a torpedo from U-124 in the mid-Atlantic 900 west of Freetown while on a lone patrol. Over 300 men were lost and 72 men were rescued by an United States merchant vessel three days later. A Portsmouth & Southsea 2 JAN 1942 cancel is on the back. A rarely seen label and probably unique on a returned letter to Bermuda.
