1st CANADIAN CONTINGENT. 1899 unstamped cover to Canada, readdressed on arrival, with an ORANGE RIVER DE 24 99 datestamp. Langley JA 31 00 and New Westminster FE 1 00 cancels are on the back. The 1st Canadian Contingent arrived in Cape Town on November 29th and were moved inland to Orange River on the 9th December. Initially theirs, along with other British Forces, was a ‘holding’ operation, their first attack against the Boers being at Paardeberg on the night of February 26-27. An early cover from a member of this Contingent sent from the Cape interior.
