1900 cover to Manchester, England, written by F. Rosenfield, a soldier in the Bechuanaland Rifles, with a Mafeking 6d on 3d with the variety “No Comma after Mafeking” tied by two strikes of the MAFEKING MR 29 00 datestamp. A Kimberley MY 22 00 transit cancel is on the front of the cover, on the back is a Manchester JU 15 00 arrival c.d.s. Mail that went the ‘southern’ route was only charged 6d compared to the ‘northern’ route charge of 1/- to England. Mail going south during the siege is much rarer and this would have been carried by a native runner before entering the postal system at Kimberley. A fine and very rare cover. Holcombe 1998 certificate.
