1901 SIEGE OF DOUGLAS. A cover sent unstamped and endorsed ‘Besieged no stamps available H.H.S.’ that has a DOUGLAS DE 29 01 cancel, and countersigned ‘McGryer, Capt, D.E.O.R.V.’ (Duke of Edinburgh’s Own Volunteer Rifles) at the lower left. A m/s ‘T2d’ and a handstruck ‘2d’ are on the cover the 2d paying the 1d Concession Rate for a soldier, and 1d for the runner who took the mail out. A Charge Clerk (Cape Town) JA 1 02 arrival datestamp is on the back of the cover. An extremely rare cover from this siege that lasted from late November 1901 to 20 January 1902, this being the Only Known Military Cover to leave during this 7 week siege. A very important Boer War siege cover.
