1901 stampless envelope written by Lieut. Gardiner of the 4th N. Z. Regt. endorsed ‘On Active Service in S. Africa, neither stamps nor money available’. Addressed to Dunedin, New Zealand, the cover has a FIELD POST OFFICE ‘26’ FE 24 01 datestamp - which in use at Krugersdorp Depot from FE 4 to March 24 1901. The cover has been countersigned by W. Christie at the lower left corner. On the back are Invercargill and R.P.O. DN – 6 transit cancels of 23 AP 1901. A few faults and a couple of vertical creases which could well have come from Lieut. Gardiner carrying the letter around for a while until he was able to get it in the postal system. The 4th New Zealand Regiment formed part of the Rhodesian Field Force. An interesting New Zealand Contingent cover.
