1902 censored 1d postal card to a P.O.W. at Diyatalawa Camp, Ceylon cancelled BRANDFORT MR 19 02. A violet “Passed Press Censor, Brandfort, 19 MR 1902” censor cachet is at the upper left. The card has been written to him by Joanna Moolman, his wife, from ‘Block C, Tent 70, BRANDFORT VROUWENKAMP. Brandfort had a Concentration Camp to the north of the town as well as two ‘Native’ camps, one 1mile south east of the town, the other 5 miles south of Brandfort. No mention is made of a Women’s Camp in any reference work. Possibly the administration had segregated women from the main part of the main camp to a holding area of their own?? It has been suggested that women and children were moved out of camps during the early period of repatriation, but this card was sent three months before that happened. There are faults to the card but a very significant item that opens a lot of questions.
