1900 censored cover to India from Major S Humphrey, 1st Gloucester Reg. a Prisoner of War at the Daspoort P.O.W. Camp near Pretoria. A Transvaal 2½d stamp has been cancelled PRETORIA 23 APR 00. A blue GEZIEN / CENSOR 23 APR 1900 strike is on the front of the cover, that on arrival at Sikhim in India was redirected to Darjeeling. On the back are numerous transit cancels before arriving at its’ destination on MY 24 00. Major Stanley Humphrey was captured by the Boers at Nicholson’s Nek on October 30th 1899. This was one of the worst defeats the British Army suffered during the Boer War with many prisoners taken.
