1902 1d postal card to Scotland from the Livingstonia Mission station at Deep Bay, with the stamp cancelled by a squared circle DEEP BAY JY 4 02 datestamp. Interesting message. The Livingstonia Mission was founded by Scottish missionary Dr. Robert Laws in 1894. Laws was sent to Malawi by the Free Church of Scotland to spread Christianity and education among the local population. The mission was named after the famous Scottish explorer David Livingstone and it soon became a centre of economic activity. In the early 20th century, the mission was expanded to include a church, a library, and a printing press. The mission also established a hospital, which was the first in the region to offer modern medical treatments. Although not a great strike of the Deep Bay cancel, one can clearly read the town name and the date.
