1896 ‘up country’ cover to England with the rare mixed franking of a 1a and a British East Africa overprint on an India 1a 6p, the stamps cancelled MOMBASA AU 8 96. Zanzibar 9 AU and Kew Gardens AU 31 transit and arrival cancels are on the back. The cover, which was written from the interior of B.E.A. and then sent, probably by runner, to Mombasa was written to the botanist Nicholas E Brown, who was the author of important works on plant taxonomy, particularly succulent plants in Africa. A fine and rare combination cover.
