1862 envelope to BARBADOS with a vertical pair of 2c and a horizontal pair of 4c, correctly paying the 12c rate, the stamps tied by extremely fine strikes of the very rare B. G. / W 3 G / AP 24 1862 cancels. A Georgetown APR 24 transit cancel is on the back and Barbados MY 10 and MY 12 arrival cancels are on the front. This ‘W 3 G’ cancel was used at VERGENOEGEN, situated on the West Coast. It opened in 1850 as a police station, the post office opening in 1862. Proud records the earliest date known from this office as 5 April 1862, so this is a very early usage. An extremely fine and rare cover to a very unusual destination.
