EIGHTH FRONTIER WAR. 1852 letter dated 12 October 1852 from besieged Fort Cox to England endorsed ‘Per Mail Steamer’ and ‘Paid’, with a GENERAL POST OFFICE CAPE TOWN h/s and red m/s ‘8’. London transit and Stratford on Avon DE 14 1852 arrival cancels are on the back. The letter was written by Lieut. Atty of the Queen’s Own Regiment. The 8th War started in December 1850 when Col. MacKinnon was ambushed by the Xhosa at Boompah Pass. The war lasted two years before Sandile and other Xhosa chiefs surrendered in February 1853. A scarce letter from this campaign.
