CONVICT STATION LETTER. 1866 entire letter to Wolve Kraal with a 4d cancelled by pen strokes. The letter has been written from the VLUGT CONVICT STATION and dated 18 April 1866. On the Prins Albert Pass, this Convict Station housed 270 prisoners whilst they built the road under the command of Andrew Geddes Bain and his son Thomas. The Convict Station moved to De Vlugt in 1864 and a Post Office was opened, although no datestamp was ever supplied. The pass was completed in 1866 and the Convict Station closed. Interesting contents, the letter refers to other mil that had been dispatched. The Cape archives have several letters from this Convict Station, all of which have manuscript cancels. This is believed the only letter outside those archives. An exceptionally fine and rare item.
