1896 1d envelope to King Williams Town cancelled by a triangular obliterator with a MIDDLE DRIFT SP 23 96 datestamp alongside. A King Williams Town 25 SP is on the back. Middle Drift was established in 1851 as a British military outpost in the frontier war of 1850-1853. The post office opened in 1867. Although only 30 miles between the two towns, the letter took two days to get there.
