Cape of Good Hope

1893 1d envelope to Cape Town cancelled by an indistinct barred 312 cancel with an NQAMAKWE MR 23 93 datestamp alongside. Nqamakwe was a very small village in the Transkei, 80 miles north of East London, established in 1876 as a settlement and college for the Mfengu clans who had been resettled in the area after wars to the north. This 1893 cover predates the earliest recorded by Frescura by 3½ years. An uncommon cancel at that time as the population by 1904 had only reached 90!
