1826 (Nov 9th) letter to Newport, from the Reverend Charles Pitman, written at the French Polynesian town of Raiatea on his way to the Cook Islands to be the first missionary to take up residence there. In the letter which was written en route Pitman refers to his role as a makeshift doctor on Raiatea treating an epidemic among the Islanders. As there are no postmarks, the letter would have been carried privately. An extremely rare early missionary letter from the Pacific and a very fine forerunner for a Cook Island collection.
