Cpe of Good Hope / British bechuanaland - Camel Post

Ref: G5817
  • £295.00

1907 ONE PENNY on 1½d postal card to Germany, written at Rietfontein but only entering the postal service at MIER where it was cancelled MIER B.B. AP 16 07. Upington 20 AP and Neustadt 20.5.07 transit and arrival cancels. There was a weekly Camel Post between Mier and Upington, a 175 mile trip across the Kalahari Desert that started in 1899. The service had reverted back to post carts in 1906 but resumed as a camel post in April 1907. This card was carried on probably the first service after the reintroduction of the camel post. Fine.
