1979 I.R.A. BOMB. A 1979 window envelope posted BIRMINGHAM 8 VI 79 that was at the Birmingham sorting Office on June 8th when two letter bombs exploded there. The attacks in June 1979 coincided with industrial action across the country and left a backlog of some 40 million letters. In total, during June 1979 13 letter bombs either exploded or were defused at post offices in the Birmingham area. This cover has an official label apologising for the damage with ‘BOMB DAMAGE’ inserted in manuscript. The datestamp of 6 JUL 79 shows the delay (28 days) caused by this bomb. A very seldom seen cover from this incident.
