FANNING ISLAND. 1908 picture post card (Kava making, Fiji) to England with a New Zealand ½d cancelled FANNING ISLAND NO 19 08. First discovered on 11 June 1798 the island was formally annexed to Great Britain on 15 March 1888 and became an important stopping place for shipping when the Pacific Cable Board’s station opened during 1902. The cable station was staffed by members of the NZ Post & Telegraph Department, with the station superintendent also acting as the Postmaster.
