1854 envelope to HONG KONG with the rare franking of an embossed 1/- green and a 10d brown on Dickinson ‘silk threaded paper’ Die 3, cancelled by numeral cancels in a diamond of London with a CHARING CROSS 23 JU 1854 dispatch cancel on the back. A Hong Kong 8 AU 54 arrival cancel is also on the back of the cover. Sir John Bowring in 1849 became British consul at Canton and superintendent of trade in China. In 1854 he was sent to Hong Kong as governor, and in 1855 he visited Siam (now Thailand), where he negotiated a treaty of commerce with the king. This letter arrived when he was the Governor of Hong Kong. Although the B. P. A. certificate that accompanies this cover states that the 1/- stamp has been lifted and replaced, this has been well done and hard to see. An extremely fine and rare rated cover to Hong Kong.
