1918 envelope to England, with the original letter, with a 3As tied by MADRAS 9 JAN 18 cancel. The cover has a boxed cachet ‘DAMAGED BY IMMERSION IN SEA WATER I.S.’ and on the back there is a manuscript ‘Torpedoed’. Other cover from Iraq and Palestine are known tying in with the same arrival London 2 MR 18 cancel, so in all probability this incident happened in the Mediterranean in February. There are a few possibilities as to which ship it was, including the Sturton and Balgray, both cargo ships that were torpedoed in the time frame.
