1917 picture post card (Church in Malta) sent from a seaman Yonekichi Suzuki on board the Japanese Cruiser Izumo, the flagship of the Japanese 2nd Special Squadron in the Mediterranean. The card was cancelled at Yokohama on arrival back in Japan on 1 JAN 18. The card is marked Gunji Yubin (Military Post) and Ken-etsuzumi (censored). The message is a New Years’ greeting. The Japanese had a squadron of ships in the Mediterranean protecting allied shipping from German submarines. They were based in Malta during this period, acting as escort to Allied ships and engaging German and Austrian submarines on 38 occasions. Mail from Japanese sailors in the Mediterranean is very uncommon.
