1846 (17 March) Soldiers’ Concession Rate letter to Lyndhurst, England, written from Mahebourg and endorsed at the top ‘From No 729 Corporal George Penny, 35th Royal Sussex Regiment’ that has the signature of the commanding officer at the lower left as per regulations to get the concessionary rate. Two strikes of the very rare circular SOLDIERS & SEAMANS LETTER BY SHIP ‘4’ cachets are on the front of the letter, which comprised 2d postage and 2d unpaid fine to be collected by the recipient. London 17 JY and Lyndhurst 18 JY 1846 transit and arrival cancels are on the back. Although slightly grubby, this is an extremely rare item with these ‘4’ markings, unique from Mauritius with the only other cover recorded with this ‘4’ being from the Cape of Good Hope. An exhibition item.
