1824 letter to France, written 7th August 1824 that has an ‘8’ (decimes) m/s marking and COLONIES / PAR BORDEAUX and BORDEAUX handstamps. This letter would have been handed to a ships captain to avoid postage in Mauritius, and only entered the postal system when it arrived in France. Although a ten pound fine per letter on anyone found carrying mail out of Mauritius was imposed in 1819, it seemed as though the practice of handing letters to ship captains was very common prior to the late 1820’s.
