1881 cover to Bristol, England, endorsed ‘On Active Service’ with a circular ‘6d’ on the front. On the back is a DURBAN 28 2 1881 shield transit cancel and Bristol and Clifton MAR 29 81 cancels. At this time the British were fighting the 1st Anglo Boer War and the Battle of Majuba Hill in Volksrust had been fought only the day before this letter was posted, so most probably written by a soldier transiting through Natal, part of the reinforcements sent to aid the British Forces there. A very scarce cover from the 1st Anglo Boer War which was fought between 16 December 1880 until 23 March 1881.
