1895 COLEMAN PROVISIONAL. Unsealed envelope sent locally with, at the upper right corner, a manuscript ‘half penny / received in money’ with the postmasters’ signature and a ‘POSTMASTER OF DURBAN’ violet handstamp. A DURBAN MR 21 95 datestamp is also at the upper right. In March 1895 there was a shortage of ½d stamps that led to provisional overprinting of ½d on 6d stamps. Between the 18th and 23rd March (excluding Sunday the 19th) J,W. Coleman wrote and signed envelopes in lieu of ½d stamps. A scarce cover with this provisional cachet.
