1907 cover to England posted on Sunday 24th February under the Sunday Late Fee service for overseas mail. A manuscript ‘Late Fee 1d’ is at the upper left and a 1d stamp added at the lower left also cancelled FE 24. Sunday Late Fee mail was accepted at Durban and Pietermaritzburg to reach Cape Town for the Union Castle mail steamer which departed every Wednesday for Southampton. This rarely seen late fee service was acknowledged in the Supplement of the Post Office Act of 1911, which lists the supplementary charge for postal articles. “27. For the acceptance at Pietermaritzburg and Durban on Sundays of ordinary letters for overseas mail, 1d per article” A Southampton MR 16 07 arrival cancel is consistent with the 16 day sailing time. A remarkable and extremely rare cover, this being the only one I have ever seen with this Sunday Late Fee service.
