1871 cover to Leeds with a 1/- green POSTAGE overprint, tied by a barred ‘1’ (of Pietermaritzburg) but with a COLENSO 17 10 1871 ‘shield’ datestamp alongside. The 1/- paid the packet rate to England. The cover was carried by the coastal steamer Natal from Durban leaving 18 October arriving Cape Town 25 October. From there it travelled on the Union steamer Syria on 5 November, arriving at Southampton on 5 December 1871. It arrived in Leeds on the same day. This was the second homeward sailing under the third contract by the Syria. An interesting cover.
