1969 charred envelope from Timaru (OC 20) to Hitchin, England, that was in a train fire during transit in New Zealand. A letter headed'Mail Damaged by Fire' on New Zealand Post Office stationery gives an apology and partial explanation. What it does not say - and there is still no record - is to when and where the incident took place. The charred envelope was forwarded in a N.Z. Post Office envelope. To date this appears to be the only recorded item from this train fire.
