1944 6d on 1/- P.O.W. air letter card to Prison of War Camp Stalag 344 , Germany, sent from HEATHCOTE VALLEY 25 NOV 44. The SIX PENCE overprint is 27mm (Scott & Startup Type 7, No. 79 in their listing.) A London 14 JY 45 datestamp is on the back. A violet boxed explanatory cachet explaining why the letter was returned to sender is also on the back. Due to the Germans removing P.O.W’s. from camps as the Allies advanced, much mail had not been delivered and was found and repatriated when the Allies occupied Germany. There appeared to be at least four different printings of the red 6d overprint as lengths of this overprint known are 25mm (the first), 26mm, 27mm and 28mm. Fine.
