1944 6d on 1/- P.O.W. air letter card to Prison of War Camp Stalag VIII B , Germany, sent from STRATFORD 16 DEC 44. The SIX PENCE overprint is 25mm (Scott & Startup Type 7, No. 96 in their listing.) A NEW ZEALAND ARMY BASE P.O. 30 JY 45 datestamp is on the back A violet straight line ‘RECOVERED BY ALLIED FORCES cachet is on the front. The letter was returned to Stratford. Due to the Germans removing P.O.W’s. from camps as the Allies advanced, much mail had not been delivered and was found and repatriated when the Allies occupied Germany. There appeared to be at least four different printings of the red 6d overprint as lengths of this overprint known are 25mm (the first), 26mm, 27mm and 28mm. Fine.
