1878 cover to France endorsed ‘Via Frisco’ franked with a pair and strip of three 1/- and a 4d, 5/4d paying the eight times letter rate for a letter between 3½ and 4oz (the rate via San Francisco was 8d per ½oz) The stamps have been cancelled by barred obliterators of AUCKLAND with a 27 MY 78 datestamp alongside. A London Paid 8 JY 78 and Angl. Amb. Calais 8 JUIL 78 transit cancels are on the front of the cover. An extremely fine and rare cover, this being THE HIGHEST KNOWN FRANKING COVER with first sideface issue stamps.
