1901 ‘campaign’ cover to London, with the original letter, from the Walter Wilkins correspondence, written in WASE, a town in the west of Northern Nigeria. On the back is a NORTHERN NIGERIA NO 7 1901datestampand a London DE 5 01 arrival c.d.s. The letter, dated 30.10.01 Wilkins Wilkins who was serving with the West Africa Frontier Force, describes the death at the hands of the French at Gujiba of Fad-El-Allah, a native leader who had claimed British protection. His death occurred on 23rd August but news of it had only just reached Wase. The French had penetrated 150 miles into British territory to kill him! A very fascinating account of life in the territory at that time
