‘ATHENA’ 1936 DELHI. The Imperial Airways Armstrong Whitworth AW XV airliner “Athena” caught fire at Willingdon Airport, Delhi, India, while being prepared for take-off on 29 September 1936 while en route to Australia from England. The crew and passengers managed to jump off the plane but the mail was severely damaged, much unsalvageable. This cover from Halifax, Yorkshire to Sydney has a ‘Seahorse’ 2/6d that has suffered fire damage. A two line ‘Salvaged from Air Liner / ATHENA’ cachet is on both the front and back of the cover.
