WWI CAPTURED SHIP. A cover from the Netherlands to England with a 12½c cancelled 8 XI 1916. The letter was carried on the Paddle Steamer KONINGEN REGENTES, that was intercepted by the German submarine UB-19, west of the North Hinder light vessel and escorted into Zeebrugge on 10 November. The captured ship was taken to Ostend before being released on 17 December. Mail considered ‘Unimportant’ by the Germans was released at the same time. On arrival in England the cover was censored and resealed with tape and a two line cachet applied ‘PART OF A MAIL CAPTURED / BY GERMANS AND DELAYED.’ before being sent to the recipient. A fine strike of this cachet.
