HURRICANE AGNES FLOOD COVER. 1972 cover to Ithica, N.Y. sent from South Westerlo N.Y. JUN 22 1972 with the stamp washed off. A violet straight line cachet ‘DAMAGED BY THE FLOOD’ is on the front of the cover. Hurricane Agnes struck New York on June 22. The widespread flooding claimed 117 lives with most of the damage in New York, Pennsylvania, Maryland and Virginia. At the time it was the most costly hurricane in U.S. history with damage estimated at $3.1 billion. Most of the damaged mail was found in street post boxes after the water subsided that had been flooded by the high water levels. A good example of a letter from this event.
