Postal Incident - Quetta Earthquake

QUETTA EARTHQUAKE. 1935 cover to England endorsed ‘Air Mail’ and ‘No Stamps Available’ that has a fine strike of the straight line ‘QUETTA EARTH QUAKE POSTAGE FREE’ cachet. A triangular ‘I.S.’ h/s is on the front of the cover, on the back is a poor QUETTA 13 JU 35 cancel. The earthquake, measuring 7.7 on the Richter Scale struck at just after 3 a.m. on 31st May levelling the town and surrounding area to the ground, killing between 30,000 and 60,000 people. For a few weeks after all postal items sent from there went free of charge. A very fine example of mail from this disaster.
