MATABELE REBELLION. 1896 unstamped soldier’s envelope to England endorsed ‘From 3620 Pte Chas Gray, 7th Hussars, Matabeleland, on Active Service’ that has been endorsed at the lower left by the Commanding Officer of the 7th Hussars to enable Private Gray to get the concession rate. The cover has been taxed with a hexagonal ‘T/10c’ and a ‘1d’ h/s applied in the UK. Wincham and Littlebourne SP 19 96 transit and arrival cancels are on the front of the cover. Throughout 1896 the regiment operated in the area of Gwelo patrolling regularly alongside the Mounted Infantry made up of men from the 2nd Yorks and Lancs. The column was usually commanded by Colonel Baden-Powell. Surprisingly, no Rhodesia cancels, but a rare cover from a soldier fighting in the rebellion.
