MATABELE REBELLION. 1896 cover endorsed ‘No Stamps Obtainable’ with a TATI MATABELELAND 17 JU 96 datestamp. The cover was taxed 6d on arrival in England on JY 27 96. Between 1894 and 1897 Tati was located in Bechuanaland. This cover was probably sent by a soldier in the Southern Relief Force that came via Kimberley and Mafeking. The 2nd Matabele War started in March 1896 with the siege of Bulawayo and the massacring of settlers in the region. The War ended in 1897 but on the day this letter was posted 17 June, War broke out at Mazowe, Mashonaland, with an attack on Alice Mine. This was followed by the medium Nehanda Nyakasikana capturing and executing Mazowe Native Commissioner Pollard. This uprising was short lived. An interesting cover ex Tati.
