1916 censored cover to Umtali, Rhodesia, endorsed ‘On Active Service’ with a violet boxed ‘POSTAGE FREE / BASE 6, N. RHODESIA / Passed by CENSOR’ cachet and a partial ARMY POST OFFICE 1, 24 JUN 16 datestamp. An Umtali 1 JUL 16 arrival datestamp is on the back of the cover. Private Rivers of B Company, B.S.A.P. Southern Rhodesia Volunteers was stationed at Bismarkburg at the time of writing. A.P.O. 1 was probably located at Broken Hill in June 1916, so the letter was probably written some weeks previously and only entered the postal system at Broken Hill. Some light water staining is at the base of the cover that could have been caused while the letter was in transit.
