1934 DAMAGED COVER. A cover from Harris that has a Western Isles Rocket Post label and a ‘TRIAL FIRING / SCARP HARRIS 28 VII 34’ cachet. On the back of the cover, which has been burned at the left, is a cachet ‘Damaged by first / explosion at / Scarp – Harris’. The small population of Scarp, an island off Harris in the Western Isles, often had no postal services for long periods due to the treacherous waters between the islands in bad weather. A number of attempts were made to convey mail across the water by rocket. The rockets exploded or caught fire and the attempts were abandoned
