S S SCYTHIA 1945. On entering the River Mersey and approaching Liverpool on 25 April 1945, a fire broke out on board the S S Scythia. The ship berthed and the fire was extinguished, but not before much of the mail was destroyed. This cover from Montreal to Bath, England, has had the stamp washed off by water when extinguishing the fire. A ‘DAMAGED BY FIRE&WATER’ cachet was applied at Liverpool.
