1940 S S TRIONA. The 4413 ton S S Triona owned by the British Phosphate Commissioners, was captured and sunk by the German raiders Komet and Orion on 6 December 1940, 220 miles south of Nauru. The passengers and crew were taken on board one of the German vessels and, along with 500 others, also captured when their boats were sunk, were released on Emirau Island, New Guinea on 21st December. The mails from the Triona were also left with the passengers. The mails were returned to Sydney on 23rd January 1941 and eventually reached Ocean Island on 11 March 1941. All the mail has a red crayon ‘RAIDER MAIL’ endorsement on the front. This censored cover was posted in Goulburn on 20 November, addressed to Ocean Island. A superb example from this incident of which only a few (about 10) covers are known.
