S.S. ELIZABETHVILLE 1942 During October / November 1942, the S.S.Elizabethville, on a voyage from Suez to Durban carrying mail from the war zone in North Africa to South Africa, sprang a leak and a quantity of mail was damaged. Most of the mail was subsequently dried out and delivered with a two line ‘DAMAGED BY / SEA WATER’ applied. This ‘On
Active Service’ censored cover from Egypt to Cape Town has been quite
badly water damaged. A bilingual 'Found Opened and officially closed' label is on the back and has a Cape Town 20 NOV 42 cancel. A very uncommon cover from this incident.
