Ship Incident - Hibernia

HIBERNIA. The steamer ‘Hibernia’ of the Cunard Line left Boston on November 1 and Halifax on November 3 bound for Liverpool. On the 5th November the ‘Hibernia’ ran aground in dense fog on a reef off Cape Race, Newfoundland. It was refloated and put into St. John’s on the 6th where it was beached and repairs carried out. It resumed its journey on the 9th and arrived in Liverpool on the 18th November. This cover from Philadelphia (OCT 28) has an endorsement at the top ‘ Pr Boston Steamer’. On the back is a London 19 Nov 1844 arrival cancel. Very few (less than 4) covers are known from this incident.
