S S BRITANNIC 1955. A ‘Radio’ card to Ireland from Covington, Kentucky, that was on board the Cunard Line S S Britannic when a fire broke out at 10.45 a.m. on 23 April in No. 4 hold causing serious damage. The hold was flooded to extinguish the fire and mail was badly water damaged. A violet three line cachet wa applied to damaged mail ‘DAMAGED BY FIRE / AND SEA WATER / ON SS. BRITTANIC.’ The cachet has the name mis-spelt with only one ‘N’ and two ‘T’s. This card has had the stamp washed off in the incident. Fine and rare, with only one other cover recorded.
