S.S. LIBERTE. The steamer Liberte sailed for New York on 6 September 1950. At some stage during the crossing water got into the hold carrying mail due to a severe storm. On board were 500 philatelic first flight covers being returned to the USA. All this mail received an explanatory label applied in New York on arrival. These two covers have varieties to the label, the one with ‘Dropped ‘o’ in York’, the other with ‘no comma after Liberte’.
